Market Abberations
The current global recession has changed the urban landscape with the closure of hundreds of commercial locations, leaving behind remnants of enterprise and the American Dream. My growing body of work responds to the global recession by capturing a tangible effect: the businesses that remain closed. At a time when the unemployment rate is above eight percent, the number of commercial buildings without workers is truly significant.
The photographs document this period in each establishment’s history. Their stories can be read through the deteriorating surfaces. What once created an attractive facade now crumbles or bears stains or graffiti. It’s both a testament to the former productivity of the business and to the activity of others who have moved in after the closure.
