— Advice from the Unemployed —
In the Advice from the Unemployed volumes, I present the viewer with advice from unemployed workers in the form of text while the viewer is confronted by panoramic images of businesses where commercial activity has ceased. I portray the unemployed multitude offering their suggestions on living in a tough economy. The viewer can judge for themselves the merits of their recommendations.
The global recession has changed the urban landscape with the closure of hundreds of commercial locations, leaving behind remnants of enterprise and the American Dream. My work responds to the global recession by capturing a tangible effect: the businesses that remain closed. At a time when the unemployment rate is above eight percent, the number of commercial buildings without workers is truly significant. My photographs document this period, the Great Recession, in each establishment's history.
